A HELPING HAND

LOS ANGELES YOUTH NETWORK

Unfortunately, thousands of youth sleep on the streets each year in our own community. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 10,000 youth under the age of 24 end up homeless each year in Los Angeles County. Thousands more are neglected by overburdened and overwrought public systems. These kids haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy a childhood. They have experienced severe traumas over long periods of time. Once they turn to the streets, they enter into a constant state of survival mode, trying to make it work from one minute to the next. Their lives, in a word, are chaos.

LAYN has a proven track record of success in working with this population of youth. As one of the few shelters licensed to care for youth 12-17, LAYN performs a vital service in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Last year, they provided nearly 10,000 bed nights to youth in need of shelter and reached over 2,000 youth and provided more than 35,000 meals to youth through street outreach and shelter placement.

LAYN’s mission is to empower abused, neglected and homeless adolescents to become self-sufficient. They strive to provide the highest quality support services and housing and believe in engaging other agencies, law enforcement, families, neighbors, youth and friends to mobilize and more importantly - to ACT. They do this so that every child can experience a meaningful life free of abuse, neglect and trauma.

GET LIT

California’s teen literacy rates are comparable to those of a developing country. 79% of low-income, African American and Latino third grade students read below proficiency.  34% of LAUSD students drop out of high school.  California is ranked 49th in teen literacy, making it second lowest in the U.S. Similarly, LA’s literacy rates are second to last in California.

Get Lit aims to attack these statistics at the source - the classroom. Get Lit’s program targets Title I schools, which primarily serve students who are most at-risk for dropping out and going to prison. The Get Lit Program ignites student’s passion for learning, keeping them in school and out of trouble. 98% of the Get Lit Players go to college and 70% get scholarships. The program reaches over 20,000 youths in 47 schools.
